It’s time to risk my lungs and finally get some clear coat on these guitar bodies. I have a rattle can of what appears to be one of the worst things you could introduce to your lungs, SprayMAX 2K Clear Glamour (Glamour = gloss). This stuff is a 2-part catalyzed urethane, with a list of dangerous components that scare the bejeebuz out of me. But it’s also apparently an amazing clear coat, so, what the hey. I load up my 3M mask with a brand new set of chemical filters and head outside while the weather is still warm enough to use this stuff.
I have both guitar bodies screwed to a common stick I can clamp down and spin around for complete coverage, then take note of the prevailing wind direction to stay upwind of any overspray, and start laying down coats.
Both bodies get a light dusting first, then every 10-15 minutes a heavier coat gets laid down until I’ve exhausted the can. I ended up with something like six or seven coats, which is possibly a little more than necessary, but this can is only good for a day, maybe two, once you’ve activated it, so I figure I might as well use it up.
And an hour or so later, she be done! Next up will be sanding and polishing the bodies, or at least the Dano as far as this blog goes. The clear coat inevitably gets an ‘orange peel’ finish after spraying, in that some trick of surface tension or some such results in a fine mottling of the clear coat finish. A final sanding will flatten this out and polishing will get it glassy. I hope!
